Where we go

Cherry Hill Township is in Camden County, and the six Camden County towns on our map are the ones closest to home. The rest of our coverage runs north through ten more counties, for thirty-eight towns in all. We group them below by the kind of housing they have, because a 1960s Cherry Hill split-level and a prewar two-family house in Paterson need very different answers to the same question.

Seven kinds of housing on our map

  • Village and farm country

Readington, Tewksbury and Lebanon townships mix old village cores with farmhouses and newer homes, and heating oil, propane and wood are all common. In Lebanon Township more than half of households heat with fuel oil.

  • Subdivisions from the 1970s to the 1990s

Clinton, Raritan, Hillsborough, Bridgewater, Bernards, Franklin, Voorhees and Gloucester townships grew mostly from the 1970s on, and the fireplace in these homes is often a listed factory-built unit in a framed chase.

  • Dense prewar blocks

Jersey City, Hoboken, Union City, West New York and Somerville have older, tightly built housing, and about half of Somerville's homes predate 1960, old enough that the state verification form still has a box for an unlined masonry chimney.

  • Prewar suburbs

Bloomfield, Collingswood and Haddonfield are older suburbs with a lot of prewar housing. Half of Bloomfield's homes predate 1950, and in Collingswood and Haddonfield about half were built before 1940, many with one masonry stack holding several flues.

  • Multi-family neighborhoods

Newark, Irvington, East Orange, Flemington, Passaic and Paterson have a large share of multi-unit housing. In Flemington about 57 percent of homes are in buildings with two or more units, so party-wall flues and shared duct runs come up often.

  • Postwar suburbs and their older neighbors

Cherry Hill, Pennsauken, Manville, Edison, Parsippany and Fair Lawn grew mostly in the decades after World War II, and in Manville almost 43 percent of homes went up between 1940 and 1959. New Brunswick, Plainfield and Clifton share many postwar streets but also keep an older prewar core.

  • Waterfront towns

Perth Amboy, Elizabeth, Bayonne and Middletown Township sit on tidal water, where a furnace or water heater in the basement deserves a look after a storm as well as before the heating season.

  • Jerry A.

Polishing the ceramic glass and unblocking the air-wash intake passages turned our heavily used woodstove back into an effective heat source.

  • Allison S.

Static-cling barriers locked the aperture tight, so that high soot agitation inside the top flue never wandered into the next-door kitchen.

  • A U.

The entire sweep was completed with engineering precision and purity never before witnessed from meticulous pre-setup to HD inside camera feature.
